American Mensa Education and Research Foundation 1999-2000 Scholarship Essay Contest Entry Form Application on Page 1 The Mensa Educational and Research Foundation (MERF), a subsidiary of American Mensa Ltd. (the high IQ society) sponsors an annual essay contest. Awards include local, regional and national scholarships.
ESSAY TOPIC AND GUIDELINES
Awards are made on the basis of an essay that describes the applicant's career, vocational, or academic goals. It is NOT necessary that the applicant be a member of Mensa. The sole eligibility requirements are that the applicant (1) be enrolled, for the academic year following the award, in a degree program in an accredited U. S. institution of post-secondary education, and (2) be a citizen or legal resident of the U. S. (Those holding a student visa are not eligible.) General awards are unrestricted as to age, race, gender, level of post‑secondary education, grade point average and financial need. There are also some restricted awards as detailed on Page 1. Winners MUST provide proof of school registration and citizenship/resident status when they are notified. Proof must be provided prior to payment of the award. Only essays that conform to the rules will be considered. Blind judging will be done on three levels: local, regional, and national. Submissions cannot be returned. For proof of receipt of your submission, enclose a stamped, self-addressed (SAS) postcard. Winners will be notified by mail by the end of June. A list of winners may be requested by sending a business‑size (#10), stamped self- addressed envelope (SASE) with the essay. No other materials are to be submitted The decision of the judges is final. Please note the rules and guidelines below.
JUDGING WILL EMPHASIZE: a goal statement that includes specific information on experience or steps taken toward the goal, persuasiveness (e.g., how your past achievements/experience and your future planning increase the probability of reaching your goal) why you think you will succeed In addition to the goal statement, close attention will be paid to the essay's grammar, spelling, and punctuation.
RULES 1. The essay must be only the applicant's original work. If quotes are used, they must be attributed. Assistance in proofreading is allowed. 2. The length of the essay shall be no more than 550 words. The articles "a", "an" and "the" are included in the word count. 3. Essays must be typewritten or computer‑generated (11 or 12 point) with full double spacing on one side only of white paper. They must have 1" margins all around and the printing must be dark enough to read easily (essays will be photocopied). Do not staple pages; they may be paper clipped. 4. Applicant’s name, address, or other identifying information MUST NOT be included in or on the essay. This information appears only on the application. 5. The applicant must fill in all requested information on Page 1 of this form completely (including signature and social security number.) 6. The envelope must contain ONLY the essay and Page 1 of the signed and completed entry form, plus (if desired) a SAS postcard to acknowledge receipt of the submission and a SASE for a list of the winners. This must be sent only to the address on the entry form. 7. Materials must be postmarked no later than January 31, 2000. Metered mail postmarked January 31, 2000, may not be accepted if not received by February 8, 2000. MERF is not responsible for late delivery by the post office. Send only by regular delivery; special delivery mail or deliveries requiring a signature will not be accepted. 8. Essay will be disqualified if any personal contact is made by an applicant (i.e., someone who has submitted an essay) with any scholarship chair or judge.
