Weekly Get-Togethers

Monday

Noon. Brookhollow LunchBunch. Mestizzo's Grill, 1893 W. Mockingbird (at Harry Hines Blvd.), next to the Radisson (Mapsco 34 S).
7:00pm. MunchBunch. Two Rows Restaurant and Brewery, at the corner of Southwestern and Greenville Ave. (Mapsco 36 B). Two Rows is a brewpub; on Monday night they have a great half-price pizza special. Great pizza and beer, and if fermented grain is not to your taste, they make their own root beer as well. Ask for the Mensa table. If you get a blank look in return, scan for familiar faces in the area to the left of the door or out on the patio.

Tuesday

6:30pm. C.Y.C.L.E. SIG (Corps of Youthful Cyclists Lacking Exercise). A weekly funride for those wanting a reasonably paced ride, but not at 25mph!  Meet by the bike trail at Harry Moss Park (Greenville @ Royal Ln, Mapsco 26 G) Some of us ride around White Rock Lake (just over 16 miles), others half that distance.  Helmets strongly recommended. Please be on time-we leave by 6:10!  We usually go for refreshments afterwards. See M-Aura for details.

Wednesday

7:00pm. Beer Garden. Humperdink's, 6050 Greenville Ave. just north of Southwestern (Mapsco 36 B). This is a brewpub with good food, reasonable prices, and excellent service.  Ask for the Mensa table.

Thursday

11:45am. D,U.M.B. (Downtown Underground Mensa Brunch) will be meeting downtown at 11:45 on Thursdays in August.  Downtown because that's where we work and it's a hassle to have to drive anywhere at lunchtime.  Underground because the tunnel is handy, both in terms of walking and fitting into an acronym.  Brunch to get a headstart on "lunch begins at 12" crowd.  See M-Aura for details.

Noon. Pancho's Mexican Buffet in Plano at the SE corner of Parker and Alma (Mapsco 658 L). The phone number there is (972) 578-1722. The buffet is $5.95 all you can eat. They do separate checks and it's quick and easy to get your food. Ask for the Mensa table.

Friday

1:00pm East Dallas Lunch Bunch. Humperdink's, 6050 Greenville Ave.- just north of Southwestern (Mapsco 36 B). Ask for the Mensa table. This is a brewpub with good food, reasonable prices, excellent service.  See M-Aura for details.

August Calendar Events

4 Friday

7:00pm. First Friday Film FlingsOur monthly movie group meets at the AMC Glen Lakes, SE corner of Walnut Hill & Central Expy (near the Toys R Us, Mapsco 26 P).  If we don't want to see anything at AMC Glen Lakes, the UA Park Central is right around the corner, so we have a dozen first run movies to choose from.  If I see a definite choice, I'll send an e-mail to regulars that day.  Worst case, if there are absolutely NO movies worth seeing, we'll go to Gershwin's for dinner. See M-Aura for details.

6 Sunday

10:30am. Sunday Breakfast Get-Together.  Join us on the first Sunday of each month at Owens Family Restaurant, Highway 183 and Story Rd. in Irving, north side of freeway (Mapsco 31A-L).  Please RSVP for head count.  See M-Aura for details.

8 Tuesday

9:00pm.  M-Aura Deadline for September Calendar.  See M-Aura for details.

10:00pm.  M-Aura Deadline for September - All Copy.  See M-Aura for details.

10 Thursday

7:00pm.  Book Club.  At the cafe in the Barnes & Noble bookstore, 14999 Preston Rd, just south of Belt Line (Mapsco 15 B).  For the August meeting, we will be discussing Henderson the Rain King, by Saul Bellow.  I realize there isn't always a lot of time to read a book between receipt of the M-Aura and our next meeting, but call or e-mail me and I will be happy to fax or mail a review of the current month's selection.  That way you can still come to the meeting and at least have a feel for what's going on.  For September, the book will be Appointment in Samarra, by John O'Hara; and for October, Dubliners, by James Joyce.  Please join us for great coffee and lively conversation!

12 Saturday

6:30 to Midnight.  Mensa Night at KERA Studios.  Every August, NTM and Mensa 76 join forces to answer the phones at KERA Channel 13 for the summer pledge drive.  This is one of our most visable events (we get on-air credit), and one of our most public spirited!  Besides being on TV, you get an official NTM t-shirt if you don't already have one.  Wear yours if you have one, and be prepared to change into one at the station if you don't.  Although our shift starts at 7:00, please be at the station by 6:30 to get instructions and eat dinner (provided, but you'll earn it later).  If you can't stay the entire shift, that's OK, just let us know.  Meet at the studios at 3000 Harry Hines (at Wolf St., Mapsco 45 E).  We need at least 25 people from NTM, so pick up the phone.  See M-Aura for details.

13 Sunday

2:00pm AG2001 Committee Meeting.  The 2nd Sunday of each month is the planning committee meeting for the 2001 Annual Gathering.  This is a working meeting, but members are welcome to attend.  Because of the last minute changes, anyone wanting to attend will need to contact one of the ChairMs to find out the location for each meeting.  See M-Aura for details.

2:00pm.  Picnic for Gifted Children (18 and under), their friends, and families at Windsurf Bay Park in Garland (Mapsco 40A-B).  From the intersection of central Expressway (Hwy 75) and LBJ (Hwy 635), take 635 east to I30.  Take I30 east to the Zion Rd. exit.  Turn right on Zion Rd., then left on Locust Grove Rd., which dead ends into the park.  We will nestle on the hill by the white pavilion, which has a spectacular view of Lake Ray Hubbard and a marina.  Bring everything you need for a picnic and lawn chairs or a blanket to sit on.  Bring outdoor games, kites, etc.  Croquet will be available.  There is a beach area for walking, but no swimming is allowed. Children ten and under must have an adult with them.  See M-Aura for details.

17 Thursday

7:00pm. Ethnic Eats checks out one of the more unusual ethnic combinations in town at Johnny Orleans Pasta Kitchen, 11661 Preston at Forest (SW corner, Mapsco 15 X).  This is an Italian-Cajun place.  How does bomba (pizza dough bread) and dirty rice or Cajun crawfish pasta sound? Please RSVP so we'll know how large a table.  See M-Aura for details.

18 Friday

6:00pm.  SINSIG for S(hy), I(nactive) or N(ew) members.  Come swallow your fears and shyness and meet new people.  At La Madeleine, 5290 Belt Line Rd. between the Tollway and Preston (Mapsco 14 D).  A great way to get your feet wet Mensa-wise and have a snack, drink or dinner in a comfortable restaurant.  Walk in the front door and we'll be in the area immediately to the left.  See M-Aura for details.
